Václav Havel becomes President

Writer and former dissident Vaclav Havel became President of Czechoslovakia following the non-violent Velvet Revolution that toppled the Communist regime. He went on to become President of the Czech Republic following the split from Slovakia, sometimes known as the Velvet Divorce.
