Cooperation begins with the United Nations

In the modern world, the Council of Europe works hand in hand with many other organisations. The United Nations is a natural partner, sharing as it does the principles of human rights, democracy and peace-building at global level, the very values that inspired first the UN Declaration of Human Rights and later the European Human Rights Convention.

The 1951 agreement was the first of a number of steps that led to close and effective ties between the organisations, opening the way to information sharing and mutual co-operation.
