Building Unity in Europe
28 November 1974 Greece re-joins
GreeceGreece withdrew from the Council of Europe in 1969 following the coup d’état that set up a military government, commonly know as the Regime of the Colonels, which pursued a system of military courts, practised torture and effectively banned democratic parties and elections. The country rejoined after democracy had been restored with free and fair elections in 1974.
