Solidarity founded

Poland Poland

Poland’s first independent self-governing trade union was founded in the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk under the leadership of Lech Walesa, the first union in a Warsaw Pact country not controlled by the Communist Party. It broadened into a wider anti-Soviet social movement and succeeded in gaining semi-free elections following negotiation with the Polish government in 1989, when a Solidarity-led coalition was formed.
