The seventh President of the European Human Rights Court, Rolv Ryssdal, born in 1914, had been a member of the resistance during the Nazi occupation of Norway and was imprisoned in 1943 until the country was liberated. He was Chief Justice of Norway’s Supreme Court for 15 years before joining the Human Rights Court in 1973, at a time when only seventeen judgments had been made. By the time of his death in 1998, the Court had delivered over 700 judgements - over 630 whilst he was President.
