In the Internet age, all of us are becoming more and more aware of the importance of protecting our privacy. The Council of Europe was first on the scene in addressing concerns about personal data with the entry into force of the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, still the only international text with a potential worldwide remit. It outlaws the processing of sensitive data on a person’s race, politics, health, religion, sexual life, or possible criminal record without proper legal safeguards, and gives the individual a right to know that information is being stored and have it corrected if necessary.
