Towards a Europe without the death penalty

All Countries

The Council of Europe made the first moves to create a death penalty zone with Protocol 6 to the Human Rights Convention in 1983. By 1985 any country joining the Council of Europe had to agree to ban executions. No executions have taken place in any of the now 47 member countries since 1997.
