Dictatorship ends in Romania

Nicolae Ceausescu, president of Romania since 1974, and his wife Elena, attempted to flee Bucharest when he realised that his long reign as dictator was coming to an end. Captured by the armed forces after abandoning their helicopter, they were tried on charges of illegal gathering of wealth and genocide and subsequently executed.
