31 March 1997 Death Penalty ends
All CountriesIn March 1997, the very last person to be executed in a European country met his death, bringing to an end a centuries-long practice that violated the most important of all rights – the right to life. For the Council of Europe, this date is a milestone in a long campaign to ban the death penalty. Today, the Council of Europe continues to campaign for a worldwide ban.
