Second Human Rights Commissioner

Swedish human rights activist Thomas Hammarberg became the second Human Rights Commissioner following a career that saw him Secretary General of Amnesty International, Save the Children Sweden and the Stockholm-based Olof Palme International Centre. He built up the system of country visits, concentrating on effectively dealing with human rights problems. He devoted himself to humanitarian work following the 2008 conflict in Georgia, defended the human rights of Roma and migrants and worked to raise awareness about LGBT rights.
