Finland marks 30 years as a Council of Europe Member State
Finland became the 23rd Member State of the Council of Europe on 5th May 1989 - the same day as the organisation celebrated its 40th anniversary. This year it will mark three decades of membership on the occasion of the Council’s 70th anniversary.
It is currently chairing the Committee of Ministers, and will hand over the six monthly stewardship of the organisation to France at a ministerial conference in Helsinki on 17 May.
