First time in 70 years that women occupy Council’s top jobs
The Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly has elected the organisation’s next Secretary General. She is Marija Pejčinović Burić, the current Minister of Foreign and European Affairs for Croatia. She will begin her five year mandate in September.
Only the second woman to head the Council since it was set up in 1949, Ms Pejčinović Burić’s election means that all four top posts at the Council are now occupied by women.
Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni (Italy)
PACE President Liliane Maury Pasquier (Switzerland)
Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović (Bosnia-Herzegovina)
