Presidents of the Court

Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos became the fourteenth President of the European Court of Human Rights when he took office on 5 May 2019. He has been the Greek judge since 18 May 2011, and Vice-President of the Court since 1 May 2017. He succeeds Guido Raimondi of Italy, and is the first Greek national to hold the post.

Guido Raimondi became thirteenth President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 1 November 2015. He is the current President of the Court, and the second person from Italy to hold the post.

Dean Spielmann took office as the twelfth President of the  European Human Rights Court on 1 November 2012.

Sir Nicolas Bratza became eleventh President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 4 November 2011 - the third person from the United Kingdom to hold the post.

Jean-Paul Costa became the tenth President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 19 January 2007. He is the second person from France to hold the post.

Luzius Wildhaber became the ninth President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 1 November 1998.

Rudolf Bernhardt became the eighth President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 24 March 1998.

Rolv Ryssdal became the seventh President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 30 May 1985.

Gérard J. Wiarda became the sixth President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 30 January 1981.

Giorgio Balladore Pallieri became the fifth President of the European Human Rights Court when he took office on 8 May 1974.

Sir Humphrey Waldock became the fourth President of the European Human Rights Court on 5 May 1971, the second person from the United Kingdom to hold the post.

Henri Rolin took office as the third  President of the European  Human Rights Court on 27 September 1968.

Lord (Arnold Duncan) McNair took office as the first President of the European Human Rights Court on 21 January 1959.
