DEMOCRACY
Israel is a member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law - better known as the Venice Commission – the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters.
DRUGS
The Council of Europe’s Pompidou Group worked in Lebanon to improve access to treatment for drug dependent users, set up treatment services in Egypt for women who use drugs, provides reliable information on drug use by school aged children in Egypt and Lebanon through MedSPAD, maintains the MedNET cooperation network in fifteen countries of the Mediterranean Region and developed a drug strategy in Lebanon.
GLOBAL INTERDEPENDENCE
The global education guidelines of the Council of Europe’s North-South Centre have been translated into Arabic.
INTERCULTURAL CITIES
The Council of Europe’s intercultural approach to integration has been adopted by Haifa in Israel.
JUSTICE
Israel has observer status with the Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ). CEPEJ Indicators on court efficiency are included in national judicial statistics in Jordan. Israel participated in work on case weighting in Malta through its involvement in CEPEJ.
SEXUAL VIOLENCE & ABUSE
The North-South Centre has trained experts on gender equality from the Southern Mediterranean. The Convention on Preventing and Combatting Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) is used as a framework for civil society in the region.
TEACHING REMEMBRANCE
The Council of Europe’s work on Holocaust remembrance and the prevention of crimes against humanity is a touchstone for work on the issue worldwide. The Council works in partnership with the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre Yad Vashem.
YOUTH
The Council of Europe has developed standards and approaches for human rights education with young people in the South Mediterranean and Arab countries.
